The Cincinnati metropolitan area, including Northern Kentucky, is the 50th largest city in the United States but ranks as the12th largest printing center. It is the second largest center for flexographic printing. The outlook for qualified printing technicians is strong. Over the next five years, the printing industry will need 50,000 people per year to replace retiring workers and to fill new jobs. The written word in newspapers, magazines, books, brochures, labels, newsletters, postcards, stationery, business forms, checks, maps, T-shirts and packaging remains vital to communications in the electronic age. Sixty-two percent of all U.S. advertising dollars are spent on print media. In fact, more money is spent on direct-mail advertising than on all television advertising.
Gateway’s Printing program, an option within Visual Communications Arts, provides students with technical skills necessary to succeed in the printing industry. The program combines classroom work with laboratory experience in electronic publishing, layout, design composition, stripping, photographic technology, plate marking and lithographic/flexographic press operation to give students solid preparation for a promising career.
