Through 2014, demand for graphic designers should grow as fast as the average for all occupations. Demand for desktop publishers is expected to grow faster, as more and more work moves in-house. New computer technology and sophisticated publishing software will help create good career opportunities for trained designers and applied artists. Talented people who have developed mastered artistic techniques and skills will have the best job prospects. (Source: DOL Occupational Outlook Handbook 2006-2007)
The Art & Design track of Gateway’s Visual Communications program prepares students for careers in graphic design, advertising and/or digital media design. Graphic designers –or graphic artists – plan, analyze, and create visual solutions to communications problems. They decide the most effective way of getting a message across in print, electronic, and film media using a variety of methods such as color, type, illustration, photography, animation, and various print and layout techniques. Graphic designers help produce magazines, newspapers, journals, corporate reports, and other publications. They also produce promotional displays and packaging, design distinctive logos for products and businesses, and develop signs and signage systems for business and government.
