A Promising Career

Most craft workers specialize in one kind of work, such as plumbing or carpentry. Industrial maintenance and repair workers, however, need skills in many different specialties. These include air conditioning, carpentry, electricity, machine tool technology, metal fabrication, and welding. Those who enter the industrial maintenance field must enjoy physically demanding work, be detail-oriented, and take pride in performing a high-quality job.

Gateway’s Industrial Maintenance Technology program provides students with skill and knowledge in maintenance and safety principles and practices. Students gain pride in workmanship and an understanding of the principles and accepted practices of the maintenance trade. Students learn through lectures and practical application.

Employment Opportunities

Industrial maintenance workers were employed in nearly every industry and held about 1.3 million jobs in 2004. On average, 1 in 5 worked in manufacturing, and 1 in 6 worked for government bodies. Others were employed by wholesale and retail firms and by real-estate firms that operate office and apartment buildings.

Employment is expected to grow about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. Job openings should be plentiful, especially for those with experience in maintenance or related fields. Many openings are expected to result from the retirement of experienced maintenance workers over the next decade. (Source: DOL Occupational Outlook Handbook 2006-2007)
