The fire/rescue training program offers classes at no cost to Kentucky volunteer fire departments, and members of paid departments who have written mutual aid agreements with volunteer departments across the Commonwealth. Students who wish to pursue a credential under this program will receive credit for training taken as a volunteer firefighter, if the training has been provided by technical college instructors. Specific course requirements for the Associate degree and certificate programs are available from state Fire/Rescue Training Coordinators. For a list of coordinators, visit the KCTCS website at http://www.kctcs.edu/kyfirecommission/. Students who seek an Associate degree must enroll in the college and pay normal charges for registration and other classes.

Fire fighters work in many settings, from residential areas, airports, chemical plants and industrial sites to grasslands and forests. Most calls involve medical emergencies, and most fire departments provide emergency medical services. Almost all departments require fire fighters to be certified as emergency medical technicians (EMTs).
Gateway’s Fire/Rescue training program offers most classes at no cost to Kentucky career or volunteer fire departments. Students who wish to pursue a diploma from our Fire/Rescue curriculum receive credit for training taken as a fire fighter. Specific course requirements are available from Fire/Rescue training coordinators. Students who seek an Associate degree or diploma must enroll at Gateway and pay required fees for registration and academic classes.
Demand for fire fighters is likely to grow faster than average through 2014. Most growth will occur as volunteer positions are converted to paid jobs in growing suburban areas. Openings also are expected to result from the need to replace fire fighters who retire, stop working for other reasons, or transfer to other occupations.
