Employment Opportunities

Engineering technicians held 532,000 jobs nationwide in 2004, with about a third of these in the electrical and electronics engineering field. About 36 percent of all engineering technicians worked in manufacturing, mainly in the computer and electronic equipment, transportation equipment and machinery manufacturing industries. Another 22 percent worked in professional, scientific and technical service industries, mostly in engineering or business-services companies that do engineering work on contract for government, manufacturing firms or other organizations.

Overall employment of engineering technicians is expected to increase about as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. Competitive pressures will force companies to improve and update manufacturing facilities and product designs, resulting in more jobs for engineering technicians. In addition to growth, many job openings will stem from the need to replace technicians who retire or leave the labor force. (Source: DOL Occupational Outlook Handbook 2006-2007)

Nature of work

Engineering technicians work in a wide range of fields, from research and development, manufacturing and sales to construction, inspection, maintenance and repair. Responsibilities vary, based on industry and area of specialization. In research and development, engineering technicians often assist engineers and scientists or conduct quality control processes. In manufacturing, they assist in product design, development, production, installation, maintenance and repair.

Gateway provides course work, competencies and experiences that prepare students for successful engineering technology careers. We offer specialized programs in electronics, computer maintenance, mechanical, industrial, computer-aided design, and robotics and automation.
