Electrical Technology
Description

 Electrical Technology

The Electrical Technology Program focuses on preparing students for various entry-level electrical positions in industry and the building trades. The study of electrical theory in the classroom and the practical application of that theory in labs provide the foundation of this program. This program is versatile in offering three different specializations within the Associate in Applied Science degree. A variety of certificates and diplomas serve as pathways to the AAS degree specializations or as meeting specific training needs. Students enrolled in the Electrical Technology program are required to achieve a minimum grade of “C” in the technical core and in those courses selected as technical electives.

An Associate in Applied Science degree in General Occupational/Technical Studies is available.

Employment Opportunities

Electricians work in all parts of the country. They held about 656,000 jobs in 2004, with nearly two-thirds of wage and salary workers employed in the construction industry. The remainder worked as maintenance electricians in other industries, and about 1 in 10 electricians were self-employed.

Employment is expected to increase as fast as the average for all occupations through 2014. Population, economy growth and new technologies will stimulate demand for skilled electricians. The increasing prevalence of robots and other automated manufacturing systems in factories will require more complex wiring systems be installed and maintained as well. Additional jobs will be created as older structures are rehabilitated and retrofitted to meet electrical codes, and many openings also are expected to occur, due to a large number of retirements. A Promising Career

Electricians install, connect, test, and maintain electrical systems for a variety of purposes, including light, power, refrigeration, climate control, security, and communications. Although construction electricians primarily install wiring systems in new homes, businesses and factories, they also may rewire or upgrade existing electrical systems.

Gateway’s Electrical Technology program prepares students for entry-level positions in industry and the building trades. The program’s foundation involves the study and practical application of electrical theory. Laboratory and classroom instruction encompasses blueprint reading, motor controls and residential wiring.

Students enrolled in the Electrical Technology program are required to achieve a minimum grade of “C” in each technical core and technical elective course.
