A Promising Career

Planning daily activities, providing appropriate stimulation, and supporting the needs of children and their families are all key elements in early childhood education.  Early childhood educatiors also must maintain a creative, safe and nurturing environment in which children can grow and learn. Students interested in working with children are personable and enjoy working with others.

Gateway’s Interdisciplinary Early Childhood Education program provides students with the skills necessary to succeed as early education professionals.  Students gain understanding in the cognitive, physical, social, and emotional principles vital to working with young children.  The program also gives students the opportunity for “real world” experience in working with young children.  Topics include, but are not limited to, curriculum development and implementation, health and safety procedures, general daily care, play skills, and guidance techniques. Students learn via lectures, on-site training experiences and practicum activities in the public and private sector.

Graduates are eligible to apply for the Child Development Associate Credential. They also meet the education requirements for a Child Care Center Director and may apply for the Kentucky Director Credential for Early Child Care Professionals.

Employment Opportunities

The program prepares students to work in child care or child enrichment centers, private preschool programs, Head Start, before and after school programs, and in-home child care. High replacement needs should create good job opportunities for early childhood education specialist. There are approximately 420 child care centers in the Northern Kentucky/Greater Cincinnati area, not including private in-home programs. (Source: yellowpages.com).
