Cosmetology
Description
Knowledge of the theories of hair, skin, and nail care is coupled with practice of the various techniques used in salons. After successful completion of the prescribed hours of instruction, (successful completion of state board exams), and the six-month apprenticeship, program graduates are eligible to take the examination administered by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetology to become licensed cosmetologists. Hours following Cosmetologist indicate length of instruction day. Progression in the Cosmetology program is contingent upon achievement of a grade of “C” or better in each course and maintenance of a 2.0 cumulative grade point average or better (on a 4.0 scale).
An Associate in Applied Science degree in General Occupational/Technical
Studies is available.

Nature of Work
If you enjoy helping others look and feel their best, cosmetology may be the career for you. Cosmetologists provide hair, scalp, facial, nail and other personal care services. They work as hairstylists, manicurists, makeup artists and more. Cosmetologists should enjoy working with a wide range of people. They are employed by beauty salons; spas; department, drug and cosmetic stores; nursing and other residential-care homes.
Gateway provides 1,800 clock hours of training in professional, personal-care services. Along with classroom theory, students receive hands-on experience in the lab. Students attend 450 clock hours of training for each of four semesters. During the first two semesters, classes occur Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. In the last two semesters, classes take place Monday through Friday from 2:30 to 9 p.m. After successfully completing the program, graduates are prepared to take the Apprentice Cosmetology Examination. Following a six-month apprenticeship under direct supervision of a licensed cosmetologist, the apprentice must take a required state board examination to become a licensed cosmetologist.
Gateway’s Cosmetology program is approved by the Kentucky Board of Hairdressers and Cosmetologists.
