Credit for Accredited Certificates
If a Gateway student has passed a national certification exam in a certain program area(s), the student may be eligible to receive credit for a technical course offered at Gateway. Examples of national certificates include but are not limited to: MOUS certification, CISCO I, II, III, IV certification and passing the National Electrical Code exam.

To receive credit, a student must show documentation of test scores to the academic advisor. The academic advisor must send the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs an official "Course Credit Request Form" for approval.

Dual Credit Courses
In an effort to provide a seamless path of education and training for students in Northern Kentucky, Gateway cooperates in a district-wide initiative to provide a seamless educational path for students taking courses in area technology centers and high school technology programs.

Gateway has entered into formal, written "dual credit agreements" with area technology centers and high schools that list courses that will count for dual credit Dual credit is defined as a class taken during high school that counts for high school credit while at the same time counting for college credit.

Upon: (a) completing a KCTCS application and a dual credit form while in high school, (b) completing three credit hours in the program of study subsequent to high school graduation, (c) receiving a grade of "C" or above in the course; and, (d) taking the course in the junior or senior year, a student will receive credit for courses at Gateway.

Tech Prep Articulation Agreements
Gateway promoties articulation of course work taken at the high school level through a Tech Prep program of studies. Articulation is defined as a process for coordinating the linking of secondary schools and post secondary institutions within a community to help students make a smooth transition from one level to another without experiencing delays, duplication of courses, or loss of credit. Therefore, Gateway has entered into formal, written "articulation agreements" with area high schools that list the courses that will articulate from each participating high school to Gateway.

If a Gateway student wishes to articulate a class taken in high school, the student and his/her academic advisor at Gateway must complete an official "Course Credit Request Form." The completed form must be sent to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs for approval. Please note that only courses in which a student receives an "A" grade during high school will count for articulation.

Transfer Classes to Gateway
If a student has attended another college or university after high school and wishes to enroll at Gateway, he/she may apply as a transfer student. The student would need to complete the KCTCS application for admission and attach official transcripts from all previously attended institutions. To receive credit for previous course work, the student will need to work with his/her advisor to complete the official Course Credit Request Form and forward it to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs to be evaluated. No transcript will be evaluated without the official form attached.

The number of hours accepted for transfer credit is determined by computing hours earned with a grade of "C-" or better in college level course work. Grades of "I", "AU", "W", "D", "E" or "F" will not transfer.

Transfer of General Studies Courses General education courses are awarded by matching general education transfer courses with the Kentucky Community and Technical College system equivalents in the area of general studies. Results of this evaluation, along with the numbers of hours accepted, will be provided following evaluation of the
transcripts. The Associate Dean of Academic Affairs will notify the student in writing when the process is complete.

If course work is over five years old OR the student has attended a college besides KCTCS or Northern Kentucky University, he/she will need to submit course descriptions or a catalog from the year attended in order to expedite the evaluation process. (Most course descriptions can be located on the institution's website.) If a student is transferring courses from another Kentucky college or university, the student should ask that institution to apply the Kentucky Transfer Model to his/her transcript. The Kentucky Transfer Module is a statewide policy, which was implemented in January 1996, that allows for the automatic transfer of a block of courses from other Kentucky public universities and community colleges within the areas of general education requirements.

General education credit will only be accepted from
institutions that are accredited by a regional accrediting agency:
• Middle States Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
• Western Assoc. of Colleges
• Northwest Assoc. of Colleges and Schools
• Southern Assoc. of Colleges & Schools
• New England Assoc. of Colleges & Schools
• North Central Assoc. of Colleges and Schools

Students who have taken an advanced placement test and have "tested out" of a course may transfer the results of the advanced placement test to Gateway as long as the credit for the test appears on the official transcript of the institution the student attended.

Gateway is on a semester calendar (1 quarter credit = .67 semester credits)

A student's GPA from other institutions does not transfer; only coursework transfers.

Gateway recommends students start the transfer process several months prior to the semester he/she plans on attending Gateway or requesting credit.

Transfer of Technical Courses

For transfer of technical courses, the student must have his/her advisor verify that the course taken at another institution is equivalent to a Gateway course. The advisor will need to sign the Course Credit Request Form and forward it to the Associate Dean of Academic Affairs. Approval of technical courses will not be approved without an advisor's signature. Technical courses will only be accepted from institutions that are recognized as accredited by the United States Department of Education. Technical courses over three years old will not transfer.
