Student Advising Center

All first semester Gateway students will be advised through the advising center. The student will not be advised until the assessment and transcript requirements have been met. Non-high school graduates (ability-to-benefit) can be advised without transcripts, but they will sign a form during the advising appointment acknowledging the need to have a high school diploma/ GED before receiving an associates degree.

Students are responsible for initiating advising contact and preparing for advising sessions. The advising relationship between the academic advisor and the student is protected by confidentiality. College-based advising systems are available to all students to assist in and provide for the following:

  • Help students define and develop realistic educational goals

  • Monitor progress toward educational goals

  • Provide information concerning completion of requirements for the educational goals developed

  • Maintain an advising file for each advisee

  • Accessibility for discussion of educational goals and curricular selections

  • approval of all designated educational transactions (e.g. schedule, drops and adds, withdrawals, change of major, graduation requirements, etc.)

  • Referrals to other campus support services

Students are ultimately responsible for fulfilling all the requirements of the curriculum in which they are enrolled. Students share responsibility for a successful college experience and are expected to contribute to effective advising sessions by:

  • Clarifying their personal abilities, interests, and goals

  • Participating in orientation programs and providing the college with all necessary test scores and academic records

  • Contacting the assigned advisor for an appointment when required or when in need of assistance

  • Becoming knowledgeable and adhering to institutional and academic policies, procedures, and requirements

  • Preparing for advising sessions and bringing appropriate resources or materials

  • Following through on actions identified during each advising session

  • Informing academic advisors of any special needs, deficiencies, or barriers that might affect academic success

  • Accepting final responsibility for all decisions.
