• History Matters: The US Survey Course on the Web
  A site for teachers and students of U.S. History survey courses. Includes primary source documents, links to high-quality history websites, student exercises to assist in evaluation of historical information and more. Developed by the Center for History and New Media, George Mason University and the American Social History Project/Center for Media and Learning at the City University of New York.
  
• American and British History Resources
  From Rutgers University. Maps, treaties, documents, biographies, book reviews, and more. Searchable by era.
  
• Harper's Weekly
  Information on social and political history, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Find cartoons, editorials, news articles, advertisements and illustrations. Covers 1857-1916.
  
• National Portrait Gallery
  Photographs on a wide range of American culture and artwork of American presidents.
  
• American Memory Project
  Multimedia collections of digitized documents, photographs, recorded sound, moving pictures, and text from the Library of Congress' Americana collections. The FAQ section gives good information on how to search the collections as well as how to cite the information found.
  
• Digital History
  Digital history of the United States from the University of Houston.
  
• Statistical Abstracts Of The United States 1878-2003
  Download U.S. statistics including figures on population, immigration, imports, revenue, debt and more. Helpful resource.
  
• Library of Congress: Prints and Photographs Reading Room
  Photographs, fine and popular prints and drawings, posters, architectural and engineering drawings. While international in scope, the collections are particularly rich in materials produced in, or documenting the history of, the United States and the lives, interests and achievements of the American people.
  

Colonial America

• Colonial Williamsburg
  Primary sources; cultural and political chronology of events from 1750-1783. A good place for hard-to-find biographies.
  
• Virtual Jamestown
  Although this website is a work-in-progress, by the time it is completed in 2007 it may very well be the most comprehensive online resource about this topic. It currently contains a wealth of primary source documents including maps, letters, online accounts and the like.
  
• Cycles of U.S. History - Colonial Cycle
  1584-1700. Founding of 13 original colonies. Links to other sites.
  
• Benjamin Franklin: A Documentary History
  From the University of Delaware, this site provides in-depth documentary history including descriptions of Franklin's activities throughout his life.
  
• The Papers of John Jay, 1745-1829
  An image database and indexing tool comprised of thousands of pages scanned from photocopies of original documents.
  
• Founding.com: A User's Guide to the Declaration of Independence
  Award-winning site provides original text of the Declaration of Independence, in additon to its historical context and a wealth of related information.
  
• American Colonist's Library
  Links to primary sources related to early American history.
  
• Religion and the Founding of the American Republic
  A Library of Congress online exhibit that chronicles religion and its relation to the founding of America.

• National Archives and Record Administration
  Online exhibits feature historical documents, photographs, posters and letters, including the full text of the Declaration of Independence. Also includes links to the Presidential libraries.
  
• American Presidents: Life Portraits
  C-Span's site about the American Presidents contains a complete video archive of all American Presidents: Life Portraits programming, plus many additional resources.
  
• AmericanPresident.org
  Comprehensive, non-partisan resource on the history of the presidency and the nature of policy making. From the University of Virginia's Miller Center of Public Affairs.
  
• The Presidents of the United States
  Official Whitehouse website provides short biographies and trivia about the U.S. Presidents.
  
• Vincent Voice Library: US Presidents of the 20th Century
  Contains sound recordings of American presidents since Benjamin Harrison.
  
• Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project
  Presents historical materials from Abraham Lincoln's Illinois years (1830-1861), including Lincoln's writings and speeches, as well as other materials illuminating antebellum Illinois.

• Documenting the American South
  In-depth website about the American South at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Primary sources and literature.
  
• AmericanSouth.org
  Digital library collection of information about the American South. This is an ongoing project of Emory University in collaboration with many Southern research libraries.
  
• Slavery and the Making of America
  PBS companion website to its four-part series on slavery and U.S. history.
  
• Uncle Tom's Cabin and American Culture
  Primary sources, texts, images, and timeline 1830-1930.
  
• Born in Slavery: Slave Narratives from the Federal Writer's Project, 1936-38
  Contains more than 2,300 first-person accounts of slavery and 500 black-and-white photographs of former slaves. These narratives were collected in the 1930s as part of the Federal Writers' Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA).
