Meet Jenna

Mom. Wife. Successful transfer student. Committed Gateway employee. Jenna started her college career as a reluctant student and after succeeding at Gateway, she transferred to expand her horizons and her opportunities.

After getting engaged in 2009, I left my job that I had been unhappy with. I was looking forward to something more. My 6-year-old daughter Ava, my fiancé and I moved about 100 miles away from Ohio to Northern Kentucky; a job opportunity became available for him there. I decided that now would be the best time to get the college education I had always wanted.

Because I wasn’t from the area, I wasn’t sure where to begin. I did some research and chose Gateway because it was the most affordable, and I knew that all of my credits would transfer if I decided to pursue a higher degree after graduation. Ever since I could remember, I had been nervous about going to college. I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I’m not even really sure why I was afraid. Gateway employees made the transition to college so comfortable. They were there to help me every step of the way.

I enrolled in the Associate in Science Transfer degree program. In spring 2011, I was hired as a student worker in the Knowledge Management department and learned more about Gateway than I ever thought I would. I ended up finding my true calling from that research-based internship. My ever supportive fiancé and I got married that May. I was so excited for the new changes in my life and to be moving forward in so many ways.

I interned for about six months, and the staff and faculty members I worked with were incredible. Anyone attending Gateway can see that the Gateway truly cares about the success of its students. I was sad to go, but excited to start the next step in my journey when I completed my associate’s degree in August 2011 and enrolled at NKU full-time as an accounting major.

I subsequently landed a full-time position with Gateway’s Knowledge Management department and am still currently enrolled part-time at a university to earn my bachelor’s degree. I plan to double major in accounting and business informatics. Looking back, I’m so glad that I chose Gateway to begin my college career. I am more because of Gateway.
