Medical Administrative Services Teach-out

Gateway Community and Technical College is changing our program offerings related to health information and related administrative services to provide students with a stronger career path in the rapidly emerging field of health information technology.

As a result, we are permanently suspending new enrollment in the Medical Administrative Services program that offers a certificate for medical coding and reimbursement specialist. Instead, people interested in this field will be directed to similar credentials in either the Medical Information (MIT) or Health Information Technology (HIT) programs. These programs lead to similar career opportunities in different healthcare settings. MIT is geared toward performing receptionist duties, scheduling, and maintaining health records, insurance claims and patient records in physician offices and other outpatient health care facilities. HIT focuses on electronic medical records, billing, and claims involving hospital or other inpatient settings.

We are also eliminating the medical office trainee certificate as a stand-alone credential in the MIT program. To assure better job prospects for graduates, we advise students to pursue diploma or degree options in either the MIT or HIT programs.

How does this change affect current Medical Administrative Services students?
A teach-out program will be offered for students currently enrolled in the medical coding and reimbursement specialist certificate program. Students who have declared this major but who have not yet taken MBS 100 “Introduction to the Health Care Field” will not be eligible for the teach-out program. These students will be advised to pursue a MIT or HIT credential as part of a more marketable career path.

Students who have taken MSB 100 will be eligible for the teach-out program, which consists of the following:

Course Requirement      When It Will Be Offered
MBS 110 Medical Insurance and Claims Processing  Summer 2012 only (discontinued after this term)
MIT 204-205 Medical Coding and Advanced Medical Coding  Fall 2012
MBS 199 Internship  Spring 2013

Upon successful completion of these requirements, students will be awarded a medical coding and billing specialist certificate.

If you are currently enrolled in the Medical Administrative Services program, please contact your advisor for more information.
