Distance Learning at Gateway
Community & Technical College
The Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS) and the Kentucky Virtual Campus (KYVC) are partners in delivering quality, on-line courses and programs “anytime, anywhere.” Gateway’s purpose is to provide learning opportunities to maximize student development by eliminating barriers such as distance, time and location in order to increase students’ success in accomplishing academic and career goals. Gateway offers four different kinds of on-line classes supported by the Blackboard Course Management System;
Blackboard Web World, Web-Enhanced, Hybrid , and Blackboard Web Local
.
Blackboard Web World: Students will NOT meet face-to-face in class and are not required to come on campus. All class work will be conducted independently or in groups, and on the Internet course website. Communication with fellow classmates and with the instructor will be conducted through the online discussion board or email. Instruction for course assignments and tests will be posted online as well. This class section number is designated with a
“Z”. Your instructor, who may be affiliated with another KCTCS college, may require you to take proctored exams at an approved testing location or KCTCS proctored test site. These classes will follow the KCTCS online course calendar that can be found at
http://www.kctcs.edu/distancelearning/Calendar.htm . To identify on Gateway’s schedule, see the note:
Blackboard Web World.
Web-Enhanced: Students must physically attend all scheduled classes on campus, but additional components will be posted on the course website for students to access outside of class time. The instructor “enhances” the class by having students go on-line for various parts of the class such as discussion, quizzes, lecture notes, etc. Your instructor will state in the course syllabus, his/her policy for using web-enhancement in his/her class. At this time, ALL GATEWAY classes are listed in the schedule as being Web-Enhanced.
Hybrid: This course is a hybrid course; 50% of the meetings and proctored exams will take place in the classroom, and 50% of meetings and instruction will take place on-line. It will be necessary for students to use the website to complete homework assignments, take practice quizzes, and communicate with the instructor and fellow class members. Students will need to follow the course schedule to see what days are scheduled for required on-campus class sessions. To identify on Gateway’s schedule, see the note: Hybrid Course.
Blackboard Web Local: This course is web-based and is delivered on-line by a Gateway instructor; students will NOT meet face-to-face in class and are not required to come on campus, with the exception of possibly being required to attend one – two Gateway campus sessions. Communication with fellow classmates and with the instructor will be conducted through the online discussion board or email. Instruction for course assignments and tests will be posted online as well. To identify on Gateway’s schedule, see the note: Blackboard Web Local.
